Fencing buying guide

Fencing is the most popular way to keep an outdoor space private and secure. Here at Covers, we have all the supplies you will need whether you're replacing old fencing, repairing damages, or starting from scratch. In this guide, we will help you choose the fencing for you.

Why do you need the fence?

To find the right fencing, it's important to understand what you want the fence for. If it's for bordering your property you will probably want something taller and more solid for privacy and extra security. If you're creating different zones within your garden perhaps trellis would be better for you - something shorter and decorative that adds a feature to your garden. When there are so many options, focusing on the main purpose of the fence will help to narrow your options.

What size of fence?

Height and privacy

Height is a major factor to consider when thinking about what fencing to choose. Do you want to be able to see over your fence? Remember if you can see out, people can see in, so if privacy and security are what you're looking for a taller fence would be better.

What about a trellis?

If you want to gain extra height you might want to consider adding trellis which could be completed with sprawling climber plants to block the view. If you are thinking of adding a trellis panel under 1.5metres are ideal, and if you're thinking of adding a gravel board remember to account for that additional height.

Replacing, repairing, or brand new?

If you're replacing or repairing old fence, but don't want to move old posts, ensure you take precise measurements before purchasing new panels. However, if you're building a new fence, you can explore the full range of sizes and styles.

What you might need

Posts

If you're starting your fencing project from scratch you will need new posts. We have timber and concrete posts for you to choose from - timber are more aesthetically pleasing where as concrete offer greater strength and durability and don't require any protective treatment.

Gravel boards

Gravel boards act as a barrier between your fence panels and the damp ground. They protect against rot and mould and add extra height to your fencing.

Trellis

Trellis can create shade and privacy within your garden as well as adding height to fence panels. They can also be used as a decorative feature on their own or by adding climbing plants to grow freely.

Accessories

From protective paint, stain and screws, you can find all the additional bits and pieces for your fencing project here at Covers. Repaint your fence with protective treatment every 6-12 months to keep it protected from the elements.
